Climb Cayambe – The Equatorial Glacier Summit of Ecuador

Introduction

At 5,790 meters (18,996 ft), Cayambe is the only place on Earth where glaciers cross the equator. This stratovolcano offers a unique climbing experience, combining high-altitude glacier travel with the rare chance to stand directly on latitude 0° while surrounded by snow and ice.

Historical Mountaineering Background

The first recorded ascent was made in 1880 by Edward Whymper, the same mountaineer who conquered Chimborazo. Since then, Cayambe has become a favorite for mountaineers seeking both technical challenge and a unique geographical experience.

Andean Cosmovision & Legends

In Andean mythology, Cayambe is a powerful Apu connected to fertility and the cycles of water. Legends say that its ice holds the memory of the ancestors, and melting glaciers are seen as messages from the mountain spirit.

Unique & Comparative Facts

  • Its crater is 800 m wide, surrounded by permanent glaciers.
