Today we journey east into the heart of the Ecuadorian Andes, ascending through remote
highlands toward the majestic Cayambe Volcano—the only snow-capped peak on the Equator.
As the landscape transforms into alpine tundra, we arrive at the Cayambe Refuge, perched at
4,600 meters above sea level and nestled beneath the glacier’s edge. The air is crisp, the views
dramatic, and the energy focused. After settling in, your guide will lead a technical briefing and
final gear check in preparation for the next morning’s alpine start. The climb to Cayambe begins

(18,996ft/5790 m) we will take our time for pictures of the surroundings and then we will
head back to the refuge in 2 to 3 hours. At the Refuge we will rest for a while, then pack

thermal waters rich in minerals. Upon arrival, you’ll check into a cozy, well-appointed
hotel with direct access to the pools. Spend the afternoon soaking in the warm, healing
waters, enjoying views of lush páramo landscapes and breathing in the crisp mountain
air. It’s the perfect setting to rest tired muscles, reflect on your journey, and recharge

We leave the comfort of the lodge behind and head deep into the Antisana Ecological Reserve,
one of the most remote and pristine regions in the Ecuadorian Andes. As we approach the base
of Antisana Volcano (5,704 m), the landscape becomes dramatic—rugged páramo, sweeping
glaciers, and towering cliffs create an atmosphere of true wilderness. Upon arrival at base camp
(approx. 4,500 m), we set up high-mountain tents and begin full expedition prep. The afternoon
is dedicated to organizing gear, reviewing safety protocols, and discussing the technical route.
This is one of Ecuador’s most demanding climbs, and the energy in camp is one of focus, respect,
and quiet excitement.

🙋‍♂️ Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the best time of year to climb in Ecuador?

Our tours typically include certified guides, transportation, accommodation, meals, and any necessary equipment for your activities. Specific inclusions vary depending on the tour, so be sure to check the detailed itinerary.

Not necessarily.

  • For Cotopaxi: Beginners with good fitness can join a summit program if they complete acclimatization hikes and receive basic glacier training.
  • For Chimborazo and Cayambe: Prior glacier experience is highly recommended due to higher altitudes and longer summit pushes.

Acclimatization is critical. To prevent altitude sickness and improve summit chances, we recommend spending 3 to 5 days hiking at altitudes above 3,000 meters before attempting any summit over 5,000 m. Our acclimatization programs are designed to help your body adjust progressively.

Yes. For safety and legal reasons, glaciated peaks like Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, Cayambe, and Antisana require an ASEGUIM/UIAGM certified mountain guide. All our guides meet this standard and have extensive experience in the Andes.

For glacier climbs, you need:

  • Double insulated mountaineering boots
  • Crampons
  • Ice axe
  • Climbing harness
  • Helmet
  • Headlamp
  • Warm base layers, down jacket, and waterproof outer layers
  • Gloves, hat, sunglasses, backpack

We offer rental equipment if you don’t

Expect a mix of cool mountain weather (5–15°C / 41–59°F) in Cotopaxi and Quilotoa, and mild to warm weather (15–25°C / 59–77°F) in Baños. Rain is possible year-round, especially in the afternoons, so bring waterproof layers.

Absolutely! You can add an extra day in Quito, continue to the Amazon or Galápagos, or upgrade accommodations. Contact us directly to customize your experience.

Yes. This tour is perfect for solo travelers, couples, families with older children (12+), and small groups. You’ll meet like-minded adventurers and be accompanied by local experts every step of the way.
